An early-stage company developing biochar intended to help concrete producers cut the carbon in their mixes, starting in the Chicago market.

BCS is developing its first Chicago-area production facility. Product is not yet available for sale or sampling; independent testing and certification are in progress.

The Idea

A Chicago answer to a global problem

Biochar Concrete Solutions was founded on one idea: building materials should carry less embodied carbon. Concrete is the most-used material in the world, and also among the most carbon-intensive materials to produce.

We're creating engineered biochar that replaces a portion of the portland cement in a mix, incorporated the way producers already use fly ash and slag. It moves carbon out of the atmosphere and into durable storage in the built environment.

The carbon case and the business case have to hold up together. We build toward both: a material producers actually want to buy, and carbon storage that stands up to independent scrutiny.

Carbon You Can Verify

Carbon removal only counts if it is measured, verified, and claimed exactly once. We will quantify our storage under the Puro.earth methodology and will retain the resulting certificates ourselves, so each tonne is claimed once, by one party.

Our Approach

How biochar concrete works

Slow pyrolysis heats wood residuals to high temperature with little oxygen. The process traps carbon in a stable, long-lasting solid, milled fine enough to work in a concrete mix.

Capturing Carbon

Plants pull CO₂ from the air as they grow. Turning that biomass into biochar, instead of letting it decay or burn, traps the carbon in a durable solid we can build with.

Substituting for Cement

Our biochar is a supplementary cementitious material that replaces a portion of the portland cement, incorporated through standard mix-design practice, the way producers already use fly ash and slag, helping lower carbon.
